Anasazi Pottery Ladle Bowl - Mesa Verde Museum

Native American, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Southern Colorado Plateau, ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A fascinating example of a ladle bowl in the black-on-white pottery tradition. The dimple where a handle would have been attached is clearly visible, providing an idea of how this characteristic artifact was made. The interior is well polished, slipped, and has a grey-white surface with black decoration of lines and dots that resembles a circle of abstract anthropomorphic figures. This item was made for heating and serving food, and would have ultimately been deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space. Condition Report: Hairline fracture down one side from the rim. Small chip from rim. Handle is lost. Nice firing marks and preservation of motifs. Handwritten collection number on underside.
