Hard boards, original publisher's cloth, gold stamped spine [some shelf wear]; 6.1/2" x 9.1/2"; salmon color endpapers [ names on the front endpaper]; 183 pages, several text illustrations and decorations, c.10 full-page plates [printed on one side only]; a little soiling, very good condition.
The monk Paphnutius met Thais the courtesan as a teenager, but fled in fear of rejection. Years later he vows to save her by conversion to the Christian life. As the experiment begins to succeed he realizes that he is more interested in her body than in her mind. Thais enters a convent for the rest of her life, while Paphnutius is left suffering with contradictions of his own creation.
Anatole France (1844-1924) French journalist, and successful novelist with several best-sellers. Ironic and skeptical, he was considered in his day the ideal French man of letters. He was a member of the Academie francaise, and won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Arthur Zaidenberg (American, 1903-1990) was a painter, sculptor, teacher, and the author of numerous art books. His popular "how-to" series was based on the idea that anyone who could write and combine simple shapes could draw. During his career, he created murals for hotels and the cruise ship Rotterdam, and made animated films during World War II for the Army Signal Corps.
