Anatolian Marble Idol - Kusura Type

Ancient Near East, Anatolia, Early Bronze Age II, ca. 2700 to 2300 BCE. A fine Kusura-type marble idol of an extremely simplified anthropomorphic form. The hand-carved idol is remarkably thin with a trapezoidal body, pointed shoulders, a tapered neck, and a discoid head. Kusura idols come from the village of Kusura in modern-day southeastern Turkey. Votive idols like this one are known in a variety of fascinating forms throughout the pre-literate ancient world. Their abstract nature suggests that, unlike modern artists, ancient sculptors did not have a penchant for conveying naturalistic human forms and could express themselves in more ambiguous yet profound ways. Condition Report: Neck reattached to body, with earthen stabilization material and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and chips to body, neck, and head, with light encrustations, and light pitting. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
