Anatolian Marble Kilia Stargazer Idol Head w/ Eyes

Ancient Near East, modern-day Turkey, Anatolia, ca. 2800 to 2200 BCE. A fine kilia head carved from a creamy white marble. The circular head has a slender nose cresting in the center, a pair of petite nubbin eyes, perky ears, and a rounded forehead. The verso tapers down to a protruding neck line and suggests this was at one time part of a larger marble sculpture. Kilia are highly stylized female figures made throughout the Mediterranean during the Chalcolithic period and Early Bronze Age. Archaeologists have interpreted these figures as female and call them "stargazers" because their heads are tilted upwards. Size: 1.4" W x 1.625" H (3.6 cm x 4.1 cm); 3.4" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition Report: This head was once part of a larger marble figure. Minor nicks to ears, nose, and peripheries, with encrustations across obverse and verso. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
