FUNCTION: object of the Biniou cult, one of the four greatest Dogon cults, this piece is named “incest” figure and refers to the Dogon mythology. POPULATION: Dogon from the Bandiagara Cliffs, region of Toro, Mali. MATERIAL(S) : hardwood with a crusty sacrificial patina made of crushed millet and sacrificial blood. DIMENSIONS: 36 cm high by 8 cm at the base. DESCRIPTION: standing on a circular base, the legs bent as a sign of submission, the abstract figure is hiding his eyes, as a sign of repentance for the primordial fault of the pale fox which had transgressed an interdict by penetrating Mother Earth, from which it was born after her union with a hare. STATE OF PRESERVATION: without break nor restoration, some little imperfections due to the antiquity. PROVENANCE: Keita family, dignitary of the Mande country in Mali, country of origin of the Dogon; Farafi Gallery, specialist in Arts of Mali for more than twenty-five years.
