“Sakab Tchitchiri” Ancestor Statuette Moba Culture, Togo. First half of the 20th century. Wood and iron. Height: 53. 5 cm; Width: 10 cm; Depth: 8. 5 cm. (ancient crack) This anthropomorphic sculpture in wood stands by itself, the arms are along the body, the legs are spread. The face comes out from the bust thanks to a notch in the wood. The neck is ornamented with an iron torque. It presents the Moba stylistic features: refined lines, a minimisation of the volumes, an almost “cubist” aspect. This type of figurine was subject to a special commission which needed to be approved by a soothsayer.
