Ancient Amlash Pottery Zoomorphic Vessel w/ Birds

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, northwestern Iran, Amlash culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A hand-built pottery vessel with a body composed of an abstract quadruped standing atop four attenuated legs. The animal presents with a wide stance with a shallow dish centered on the back as well as a petite tail curling off of the posterior. Surmounting each shoulder is a minimalist bird exhibiting a plump body, a slender neck, and a tapered beak. The surfaces of the vessel are adorned with faint red and orange-red hues that suggest this was vibrantly painted at one time. Size: 6.25" L x 3.75" W x 6.4" H (15.9 cm x 9.5 cm x 16.3 cm)

Condition Report: Repairs to right front leg, bird head around the neck, and areas of rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Losses to tail tip and crest atop quadruped head as shown. Abrasions and encrustations to body, birds, and vessel, with fading to original pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
