Ancient Canaanite Bronze Duckbill Axe Heads (3)

[ translate ]

Ancient Near East, the Levant, Canaan, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1950 to 1539 BCE. A wonderful gathering of cast-bronze axe heads of characteristic 'duckbill' shapes with openwork hafting slots behind stocky blades. Two narrow axe heads bear ovoid perforations that increase their aerodynamic efficiency when swung, and the largest axe head bears enormous 'eyes' in the center. All three axe heads are enveloped with thick layers of mottled brown, russet, and green patina. This is the style of axe head from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. Size of largest: 4.4" L x 2.875" W (11.2 cm x 7.3 cm)

Provenance: private Dallas, Texas, USA collection; ex-Civilization Gallery, Dr. Kilinski collection, Dallas, Texas, USA, acquired in 1993 in Lebanon

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
