Ancient Canaanite Bronze Duckbill Axe Heads (3)

Ancient Near East, the Levant, Canaan, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1950 to 1539 BCE. A wonderful gathering of cast-bronze axe heads of characteristic 'duckbill' shapes with openwork hafting slots behind stocky blades. Two narrow axe heads bear ovoid perforations that increase their aerodynamic efficiency when swung, and the largest axe head bears enormous 'eyes' in the center. All three axe heads are enveloped with thick layers of mottled brown, russet, and green patina. This is the style of axe head from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. Condition Report: Repair to middle of socketing shaft of largest axe head, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Losses to two peripheral areas of smaller, narrow axe head; larger narrow axe head is intact and very good. All pieces have light encrustations and abrasions. Great patina throughout.
