A painted terracotta head from a larger figure. The nose, eyes, lips and ears are well modelled, with much character and the lips have a slight smile. Most of the original pigments remain; the face with pink slip and a touch of red to the lips. The top and back of the head with fine ridges to simulate combed hair which is then painted in black. No stand is supplied with this figure although there is a drilled hole in the base for fitting. Western Han Dynasty: Circa 1st-2nd century BC. Grave goods were an important status symbol in ancient China. Many attendants have been found in ancient Chinese tombs, indicating the need for assistance in the afterlife.
