Labor Kotalla, Germany A rare Yue Ware statue of a Zhenmushou or Spirit Tomb Guardian. The Zhenmushou was made for burial tombs. These figures are believed to protect the living by keeping the spirits of the dead from inappropriately roaming the world outside the tomb, as well as protecting the tomb from intrusions by robbers or spirits; the Guardian Spirits were apparently associated with the first role, and the lokapala with the second.
