Ancient Cypriot Pottery Bilbil Juglet

Ancient Near East, Cyprus, late Cypriot I, ca. 1600 to 1050 BCE. A tall, wheel-thrown pottery juglet known as a bilbil meant to hold scented oils or medicinal liquids. The vessel has a squat foot beneath a spherical body, a tapered cylindrical neck surmounted by a flared rim, and a strap handle arching from neck to shoulder. Groups of four white lines are drawn across the pale brown body and create areas of ringed and crosshatch motifs. Size: 2.9" W x 5.75" H (7.4 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition Report: Restoration to front of foot, with small area of loss near center of foot. Minor pitting and abrasions to foot, body, handle, and spout, with light fading to original pigment, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
