He is represented with the head of a jackal, iconography that he acquired since the New Kingdom. However, he sometimes exchanged his appearance with that of Qebehsenuf, adopting the head of a falcon. Along with his brothers Amset, Hapi and Qebehsenuf, Duamutef protected the mummified internal organs. Duamutef's duty was to protect the stomach. His protector was the goddess Neit. Duamutef was often depicted on sarcophagi and on the lids of canopic canopies. Many images of the Judgment of the Dead show him along with his brothers facing Osiris on a small lily.
