Antique Burano embroidery depicting the winged or St. Mark’s lion Technique used: ‘Punto in aria’ (without aid of bobbins) Hand assembled on linen Unique devotional artwork made under commission Burano, Italy. Period: late 17th, early 18th century Kept in excellent condition, handed down in a family and always kept in display case. No tears, no shortcomings. Description: Devotional, unique work, probably Jewish, made under commission. Made in the antique technique called “Punto in aria” (stitch in air) without bobbins Rare, fine, museum worthy artwork that masterfully represents the symbol of Venice with net of Buranese fishermen in the background. The Lion is resting a paw on an open book with the initials of the Latin phrase "Pax Tibi Marce Evangelista Meus". Obvious and unequivocal reference to Mark the Evangelist corroborated by the presence of a halo on the head of the feline. The tail deliberately points upwards, typical of Venetian representations of the time. The Lion is framed above by a row of laurel leaves, symbol of Triumph, Success and Eternity; below by a row of oak leaves symbol of Strength, Protection, Courage, Truth of Man and Fertility.
