Ancient Greek Ceramic Apulian, 4th Century BC Guttus with Herakles head. 13 cm L. Very huge.

APULIAN GUTTUS WITH HERAKLES HEAD. - nice - - big exmaple - Greek, Apulia, 4th Century BC Pottery Diameter 11 cm; Height 13 cm PROVENANCE: Private collection, Palma de Mallorca, Spain. 1980 - 1990. CONDITION: Regoined from big sizes, good quality, see photos. DESCRIPTION: The discus modelled in relief with head of Herakles on wearing the lion skin, a tall spout and out-turned rim, a side loop handle, with ribbing around the shoulder of the vessel, set on a short ring base. A guttus is a type of Greek flask characterized by its narrow neck, which was used to pour oil during meals. In the central are we see a mythological scene in relief depicting the hero Bellerophon, or possibly Pegasus, mounted on a horse and killing an Amazon. Magna Graecia is the name given to the territory occupied by Greek colonists in the southern area of the Italian Peninsula and in Sicily. Here they founded numerous polis which traded with the metropolis. As a result of this colonization, Greek cultural models were imported, and along with these, the language, traditions, rites, and artistic and architectonic expressions. The most visible examples of these is the pottery produced in this region. Notes: - The piece includes authenticity certificate. - The piece includes Spanish Export License (Passport for European Union) . - According to Spanish legislation, items sent outside the European Union are subject to export taxes and will be added to the invoice, at the buyer's expense.
