Skyphos with a satyr and menad - with thermoluminescence test - - very nice quality - - greek text: export mark in the base - Greek, Attic 5th Century BC Pottery 23,5 cm Large and 12 cm Height. PROVENANCE: Private collection J. Martí, Barcelona, Spain. Formed during 1960 - 1990. Acquired in the Barcelona - Madrid art market. CONDITION: DESCRIPTION: Satyrs were male creatures in Greek mythology who accompanied Pan and Dionysus, roaming around the woods and mountains. They often appear with the Maenads, together forming the “Dionysian entourage” which accompanied the god Dionysus. This is a common motif for the decoration of Greek vases. Satyrs are seen celebrating festivities and chasing nymphs and maenads, as these figures are associated with sexual appetite. Some traditions consider Silenus to be the father of the tribe of satyrs. Later, poets would use the name of these creatures in the invention of their satires. A skyphos is a two-handled deep wine-cup on a low base or none. The handles may be small horizontal ear-shaped thumbholds that project from the rim, or they may be loop handles at the rim or that stand away from the lower part of the body. Skyphoi of the type called glaux (owl) have one horizontal and one vertical thumbhold handle. The earliest examples of skyphoi are from the Geometric period. They were also made of precious metals. Red-figure pottery was one of the most important figurative styles of Greek production. It developed in Athens around 530 BC and was used until the 3rd Century AD. In the space of a few decades it took over the place of the previous dominant style of black-figure pottery. The technical base was the same in both cases but in red-figure pottery the colouring is reversed so that the figures stand out on a dark background as if they were lit up in a more natural way. The painters who did black-figure work were forced to keep the motifs they painted well apart one from the other and to limit their complexity. In contrast, the red-figure technique gave much greater liberty. Each figure was silhouetted against a black background, allowing the painters to portray anatomical details with greater accuracy and variety. The technique consisted of painting the motifs on the vessels while they were still unfired using a transparent slip, which when fired took on a black coloration. In this manner the motifs were invisible before firing so that the painters had to work from memory without seeing their earlier work. Once the piece had been fired the zones which had not been covered by the slip retained the red colouring of the clay while the glossy areas, those that had been “painted, acquired a dense, brilliant black colour. Notes: - The piece includes authenticity certificate. - The piece includes Spanish Export License (Passport for European Union) . - According to Spanish legislation, items sent outside the European Union are subject to export taxes and will be added to the invoice, at the buyer's expense. These export fees are fixed on the final auction price and the tax rate is not applied directly on the total value of the item to be exported, but rather the different percentages by sections are applied to it: - Up to 6,000 euros: 5%. - From 6. 001 to 60. 000 euros: 10%. - From 60. 001 to 600. 000 euros: 20%.
