Ancient Greek Ceramic Canosan Lekythos in the shape of a Woman's Head. With TL Test with Spanish Import Licence

[ translate ]

A superb funerary, figural pottery lekythos in the form of an elegant female head - her slender, oval face with a dimpled chin, full heart-shaped lips, a thin aquiline nose, and lidded almond-shaped eyes. Ears with beautiful flower earrings. A centrally-parted wavy coiffure topped by a radiate diadem, her sakkos decorated with two blooming flowers with sizeable petals on each side . This visage is surmounted by a female figure standing in contrapposto and wearing a tightly-wrapped himation over a long chiton with drapery folds accentuating her curvaceous body, a floral diadem in her hair and blue disc earrings. A high arching, ribbed handle joins her shoulders to the back of the head below. Liberal pink, blue and white pigments remain on the surface.

This lekythos was an offering at the tomb of a well-born lady. It depicts a slender, elegant woman(probably representing the deceased) rising from the head of a diademed goddess, who is perhaps a local version of the Bona Dea, the protector of women.

The piece includes Thermoluminescence Test.

Condition: Restored from original fragments. Base of the female figure restored. Some of the diadem spikes missing. One missing petal on right flower earring. Surface wear but fine condition.

Dimesnions: 51,00 cm

Provenance: Spanish antiquarian. Acquired at a french auction house in 2023. Formerly old french private collection.
Invoice seen by Catawiki.

Notes:

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this lot. The piece includes spanish export license for the European Union. If the piece goes outside the European Union a new export license will be requested. This process can take between 2 and 4 weeks.
