Ancient Greek Ceramic Daunian Bichrome Bell Krater. Vegetable Motif - 15.5×16.5×15.5 cm

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A stunning Daunian pottery krater with a large, rounded body, a broad funnel rim, and twin upraised handles, all upon a flared, pedestal foot. This entire form is covered with hand-painted linear bands and horizontal registers of vegetal motifs in hues of cream and orange. As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centres of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery while somewhat more rustic compared to black glazed and red figure South Italic Greek pottery is characterised by voluminous rounded forms with striking geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones, just as we see in this intriguing example.
