Ancient Greek Ceramic Epichysis

[ translate ]

Epichysis; Magna Graecia, Apulia, 4th century B. C. Black ceramic. Dimensions: 15 x 9 cm It comes from an antique Spanish collection, before 1980. Epiquisis of Magna Graecia made of ceramic and decorated with geometric and vegetable motifs in white on a black background. The epichysis was a closed container, for oil, ointments or other liquids, also used to pour the wine and transfer a liquid from a large vessel to another container. Different sources speak of bronze epichysis and others used to pour the oil into the lamps, but it will be Varro who provides the most explicit references: it indicates that this typology replaced the Roman guttus with the introduction in Rome of Greek fashions. Possibly it is, therefore, the Greek equivalent of Latin guttus. Provenance: The Supplier warrants that he obtained this lot legally. Provenance statement seen by Catawiki. Important information. The seller guarantees that he is entitled to ship this lot. The seller will take care that any necessary permits will be arranged. The seller will inform the buyer about this if this takes more than a few days. Important: For destinations out of Spanish territory: all our objects will be shipped after obtaining CERTIFICATE OF EXPORTATION by Ministry of Culture of Spain. We inform our clients that it may take between 4-8 weeks.
