Ancient Greek Ceramic Plate - 5×27×27 cm

[ translate ]

Plate; Magna Graecia, 4th century BC. Black ceramic. Attached thermoluminescence certificate. Spanish collection, before 1960, acquired in 2016. Dimensions: 5 x 27 cm Ceramic plate decorated with geometric elements at the end and inside which you can observe the profile of a woman. The piece combines the technique of red figures with black figures, based on the use of a transparent varnish that, when cooked, acquired an intense and bright black hue. Therefore, the motives were invisible before cooking, due to which painters had to work completely by memory, without being able to see their previous work. Once the piece was baked, the areas not covered by the varnish remained with the reddish hue of the clay, while the glazes, the "painted" ones, adopted a dense and bright black colour. The technique of black figures was introduced in Corinth around 700 BC, being adopted by attic artists in the orientalising period (725 – 625 BC) . The great series of ceramics of black figures, which had its main centre in Athens and which will last until the beginning of the 5th century BC, will then begin. It comes from an antique Spanish collection, before 1980. Provenance: The Supplier warrants that he obtained this lot legally. Provenance statement seen by Catawiki. Important information.
