Ancient Greek Terracotta Gnathia - ware Skyphos - 5.5×9.2×15.5 cm - (1)

Apulia, Gnathia ware skyphos (drinking bowl with two horizontal handles) approx. 350 - 300 B C, diameter: 92 mm, width with handles 155 mm, height 55 mm Spherical small bowl with a high rim and two horizontally attached handles, these are attached near the lip. High, conical ring base with bridge in the middle, which divides the foot into two hollows. Very fine, thin-walled design. The specimen is completely glazed black with the exception of the clay red ribbon, which decorates the inner part of the foot. The décor painted in red and white is arranged in friezes: just below the lip from handle to handle with carvings. Such vessels were produced in southern Italy for about a hundred years, from the middle of the fourth century B C until the end of the following century. The decorative patterns (figural, vegetal and mostly geometric) were applied to the black painted surface and highlighted in white, brown/golden yellow and less often in purple - as can be seen beautifully here Condition: A shard reinserted, the varnish has a fantastic metallic shine.
