Head of a young woman Greek 4th Century BC Terracotta Height 9 cm (Without stand) Private European collection acquired in the 1980s. In a good state of preservation DESCRIPTION: The representation of a woman’s head. The face has a characteristic expression of melancholy thought or meditation suggesting reserve or restraint. Her hair is parted down the middle and pulled back in a bun in a manner called the “melon hairstyle” which was the commonly seen style in this type of terracotta. A decoration can also be seen in the hair in the form of a diadem. At the end of the 4th Century BC a style of modeling clay called “Tanagra style” was developed. The name comes from the city of the same name, a center of production of terracotta figurines. The term alludes to a female figure, generally one standing, wearing a long draped chiton, over which was thrown a fine wide cloak. These women also often wore shoes, wide pointed hats and carried fans. They rarely carried other objects and in place of these, the arms and hands were wrapped in the cloak which could also be used to cover the head, and sometimes to almost completely cover the face. Notes: The piece includes authenticity certificate. The piece includes Spanish Export License (Passport for European Union) - If the piece is destined outside the European Union a substitution of the export permit should be requested. This process could take between 1 and 2 months.
