Ancient Greek Terracotta female figure, 7,5 x 5 cm / 9,5 cm with stand

This upper fragment of a female figure is presented on a wooden base. Selinunte, in the Classical period, was a rich commercial centre of Magna Graecia. It was in constant conflict with Segesta, a city allied to Athens. However, the Athenians were defeated by the Syracusans and Segesta appealed to Carthage for help. Diodorus Siculus tells how the Carthaginian commander Hannibal Magon, in 409 BC, destroyed Selinunte after a siege that resulted in 16,000 dead and 5,000 prisoners.
