This female head is presented on a wooden base and shows details of the face, such as the hairstyle under the ceremonial hat. Selinunte, in the Classical period, was a rich commercial centre of Magna Graecia. It was in constant conflict with Segesta, a city allied with Athens. However, the Athenians were defeated by the Syracusans and Segesta asked Carthage for help. Diodorus Siculus tells how the Carthaginian commander Hannibal Magon, in 409 BC, destroyed Selinunte after a siege that resulted in 16,000 dead and 5,000 prisoners.
