Ancient Order of the Foresters, UK, 1844
A unique and rare sterling and enamel award medal. The Ancient Order of the Foresters, United Kingdom, 1844-1845. The large sterling order is centered with an enamel painting depicting two men flanking the armorial coat of arms (1.25" diameter). A stag surmounts the award, which sits atop a crown, which in turn sits above two hands engaged in a handshake. A motif of acorns, flowers and raised geometric lines decorate the main portion of the order. Crossed arrows and a bugle add further detail. Overall measurements 7' high, 3" wide. Hallmarks for London,1845, Maker's initials MS (possibly for Michael Starkey) Overall weight 60 grams.IMPORTANT PROVENANCE: The back of the medal is engraved as follows "Presented to Br (Brother) Thos (Thomas) Sloane PD. CR, by the North Preston district for his Valuable service in the cause of Forestry, 18th May 1844".
