Ancient Roman Bone Pair of one hair pins - 15.2 cm

[ translate ]

Carved bone hairpins, with head in the form of a theater mask with elaborate hairstyle, the cylindrical shaft is tapering to its end for easy insertion into the hair.
15. 2 cm and 14. 2 cm

Provenance
Private collection, Switzerland, acquired 1985

Note
Roman pins were probably used to facilitate the elaborate female hairstyles of the period. The hair would have to be twisted and coiled, to prevent the smooth pin from falling out. Examples of hair pins have been found in a wide array of materials, such as bone, bronze, glass, and stone. Most were decorative in design, occasionally boasting ornate figurative heads in the shape of animals, plants, or, as can be seen on this example, theater masks.
