Roman legionary brooch with "X" markings, Legio X Gemina Vindobona (Vienna) , bronze, completely intact. perfect state

Used in Germanic auxiliary troops and possible connection to the Legio X Gemina in Vienna (Vindobona) in the late Roman imperial period.

This new type of crossbow brooch was developed by Germanic tribes in the Roman provinces. They can be assigned to the late Roman imperial period from 200 AD and, as a group of Niemberg brooches or Almgren group V, are typical of the East Germanic areas up to around 500 AD. Grave finds can be found in central Germany to Austria (around Munich-Ramersdorf) .

Its innovative two-part design with a separate spiral creates the technical requirements for repairs and was therefore ideal for heavy-duty work such as Roman military service.

History of the Legio X Gemina:

When the Helvetii conquered the province of Narbonensis in 58 BC. When the Romans attacked in 200 BC, Legio X was the only force available to Caesar. It served as an elite force during the Gallic War. The legion was involved in the following battles: 58 BC. Battle against Ariovistus, 57 BC Battle against the Nervii, 55 BC BC Invasion of Britain and 52 BC 3000 BC Siege of Gergovia.

During the Civil War the Legion fought in 49 BC. BC in the Battle of Ilerda against Pompey. 47-46 B. C. In 400 BC the legion was seen in Africa and at the Battle of Thapsus. 45 B. C. In 400 BC the legion was used for the last time at the Battle of Munda and was then disbanded.

After Caesar's assassination, the legion was defeated in the winter of 44 BC. Reestablished by Lepidus in 42 BC and subordinated to Marcus Antonius in 42 BC. To defeat the assassins of Caesar in the Battle of Philippi.

She then followed in 36-34 BC. BC Marcus Antonius on his campaign against the Parthians in Armenia. After the defeat at Actium in 31 BC. The legion was taken over by Augustus in 400 BC. From 71 to 104 AD, the legion was stationed at the Batavorum camp to monitor Batavian territory and prevent new revolts. The Legion's surveillance area covered around 2000 km² between the Rhine and Meuse.

Around 114 AD the legion finally moved to Vindobona (Vienna) and remained there for over 300 years until the fall of Rome. During the suppression of the Bar Kochba revolt in 132–136 AD and in 162 AD in the Parthian War of Lucius Verus, parts of the legion were again involved in fighting. From 166 to 182 AD, the Legio X Gemina fought the Quadi tribe in the Marcomannic Wars.

When Severus, the governor of Pannonia superior, had himself proclaimed emperor, he was only reluctantly supported by the legion. The legion took part in the battles against the usurper Niger in 193-194 AD.

Emperor Valentinian continued massive expansion work on the Pannonian Danube Limes and had Roman military installations built in the Quadi area, contrary to existing treaties. The Quadi king, who was invited to talks after Quadian protests due to the hostile construction work, was murdered by Marcellianus during a banquet. The angry Quadi then invaded Pannonia. In June 374 AD, Valentinian personally appeared on the scene of war to crush the opponents.
