Ancient Roman Bronze Important Merchants Weight with inscription LIB. RAS (above) DVA (in niello) , bellow two couples of double facing portraits at each circle. The Gravity of 100 Roman Silver Denarii from the late republican time around the time of Gaius Julius Caesar (Example: see the denarius of Gaius Julius Caesar from the Moneyer L. Livineius Regulus minted in Rome 42 BC. from the Stoecklin Collection type: Babelon (Julia) 57, (Livineia) 1. Crawford 494/24. CRI 115. Sydenham 1106.) with the exact weight of 4. 25 g. The weight of this interesting merchants weight is 425 g. which should automatically means that is equivalent of 100 Roman Silver Denarii. The inscription is very curious because means a double Libra which from the roman metric system should weight 2 x 328. 9 g. (1 libra is 328. 9 g.) - 657. 8 g instead of 425 which are 1 Libra and 3,5 Unciae or also 10 Roman Republican Asses ca. 42- 43 g. each. The portraits are worn because of usage or probably were enamelled. With brown ''river'' natural patina and still usable! Lovely and very rare piece and important for the roman weight-metric system which is the base of the system in the modern times. Material: Bronze Date: around 1st. Century BC. Size: 5,2cm. Weight: 425g. Item No. E5 Purchased by the current owner in 2010 in Austria, Wien from Collector fair. Collected Since: 1990's. Previous owners history: Old Austrian Private Collection.
