A pair of rein rings Roman Empire,1st – 2nd Century AD Bronze Height 9. 3 and 9. 2 cm PROVENANCE: Private collection of D. A. , Zaragoza, Spain. Adquirido por herencia de los años 1970. In a good state of preservation. Intact. DESCRIPTION: A pair of bronze rein rings made up of two elements: the functional piece, a support with four pointed corners and a circular ring below it, and the merely decorative element showing the bust of the Graeco-Egyptian god Serapis on a podium. This god is seen in his most habitual representation, as an adult with long hair and beard, a wide tunic covering his entire body and with a cloak over his left shoulder. There is only one difference to be seen between the two rein rings: one shows the god with a circular appliqué or fibula to the right of the chest while the other has a half moon shape modelled over his diaphragm. The attribute which distinguishes images of Serapis from those of other similar gods is the calathus or modius, a sacred basket in myths, a symbol of abundance. These unite the concept of agricultural fertility, life and death, and were used in Ancient Egyptian art and in the Graeco-Roman world. The modius resembles the round pad worn on the head when transporting and balancing a heavy load there. Scholars chose this name as the piece resembles the Roman modius, a utensil used as a unit of measure for grain. Notes: - The piece includes authenticity certificate. - The piece includes Spanish Export License (Passport for European Union) . - According to Spanish legislation, items sent outside the European Union are subject to export taxes and will be added to the invoice, at the buyer's expense. These export fees are fixed on the final auction price and the tax rate is not applied directly on the total value of the item to be exported, but rather the different percentages by sections are applied to it: - Up to 6,000 euros: 5%. - From 6. 001 to 60. 000 euros: 10%. This export permit application process can take between 1-2 months maximum. - The seller guarantees that he acquired this piece according to all national and international laws related to the ownership of cultural property.
