Ancient Roman Glass Jug 1st Century
A free-blown jug composed of translucent aqua-green glass, approx. 17 cms h. The jug features a bulbous, globular body tapering upward into a wide, slightly flared cylindrical neck. The thick, unworked rim is characteristic of specialized early workshops, centred in the Italian peninsula. a single, think dark-coloured glass strap handle is applied to the upper shoulder. The exterior exhibits a dramatic and extensive layer of silvery-white burial encrustation and mineralized layers. Where the original glass catches the light, it reveals a vibrant iridescent flash of peacock blue, turquoise, violet and gold, resulting from exposure to damp soil, which slowly breaks glass down into micro-layers that refract light.
Provenance: Private Collection London.
