Ancient Roman Glass Jug

[ translate ]

Ca. 200-300 AD A beautiful, originally transparent/green pitcher which is now covered in a silvery patina standing on a circular, slightly concave base. The pear-shaped body tapers to a cylindrical neck which widens towards the splayed rim. The handle develops into a prominent arched finial which straddles the back of the vessel’s trefoil lip. The excellent state of preservation makes this elegant jug an extraordinary work of the late Roman glass industry. For a similar pitcher, cf. Glass from the Ancient World: The Ray Winfield Smith Collection. A Special Exhibition. Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, 1957, p. 125, item n. 229. Size: L: 132mm / W: 55mm; 45. 7g Provenance: From the private collection of a Kent gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed in the 1990s on the UK / European art markets.
