Ancient Roman Gold Ring with Portrait of a Young Male

Circa 2nd century AD
This gold ring features a rounded exterior, expanding dramatically to support a bezel cell set with a large oval-shaped intaglio. The intaglio is engraved with a left-facing portrait of a youth figure.
Roman glyptic artists utilized various techniques to create their intricate designs. Intaglios were engraved into the surface of a gemstone, creating a recessed image that could be used as a seal. Cameos, on the other hand, were carved in relief, with the design raised above the surface of the stone. Gemstones commonly used for glyptic art included carnelian, sardonyx, amethyst, and agate.

Dimensions: Diameter 18. 75mm; US Size 8 3/4; UK Size R; weight 5g
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-2000 Collections.
