Ancient Roman Marble Sarcophagus Fragment with a Veiled Female Bust. 39 cms H With French Export License

A superb roman marble sarcophagus fragment depicting a female head with a veil drawn over her centrally-parted wavy hair, with straight gaze and head turned to her right. The portrait shows a young lady whose head is covered with a mantle. The cloth hangs down loosely on both sides. Her hairdo shows a large bank of short wavy locks framing her face, covering her ears and streaming backward to disappear beneath the mantle. Her face, with serene expression, features beautiful almond eyes, pursed, full lips with a slight smile and beautiful smooth lines on the cheeks and chin. Hole in the base for fixing with base. Sold without support.

Due to the style of the portrait and the treatment of the hair, the piece can be situated at the end of the Antonine dynasty.

Condition: Grey veined marble. Part of the nose reconstructed. One single fracture line is restored and goes runs diagonally through part of the first fold of the veil to the left area ( see pictures) . The face, a part from the nose, is intact and well preserved. Some surface damage on the top right side of the veil with, minor pit marks. Good overall condition.

Dimensions: 39,00 x 30,00 x 14,00 cm.

Provenance: Acquired at a french auction house. Formerly french private collection. The piece includes French Export License.

Notes:
- The piece includes authenticity certificate. The piece is in process of obtaining
Spanish Export License ( Passport for European Union) . This process can take between 2 and 4 weeks.
- If the piece goes outside the European Union a new export license will
be requested by us, This process can take beteen 1 and 2 months.
According to Spanish legislation, items sent outside the European Union
are subject to export taxes and will be added to the invoice, at the
buyer's expense. These export fees are fixed on the final auction price
and the tax rate is not applied directly on the total value of the item
to be exported, but rather the different percentages by sections are
applied to it:
