Ancient Roman Marble important lifesized sculpture of a god Eros with a chlamys. 31 cm H.

Reclined child sculpture fragment - God Eros. Roman Empire, circa 2nd century AD MATERIAL: Marble DIMENSIONS: 29 x 31 x 16 centimeters. 16 KG. PROVENANCE: -Old private collection, Massachusetts, acquired prior to 1990's. - Later with J. M. Auction house. - Spanish Private collection. Provided of export license issued by the Ministry of Cuture in Spain. CONDITION: In a good general condition, with some wear. Unrestored. DESCRIPTION: A statue in white marble of a baby, aged 2 or 3 years, wih a chlamys (a rectangular cloak fastened at the neck or shoulder that wraps around the body like a cape) , the depiction of the child is naturalistic and of very good quality. The articulated eyes point out a second century AD manufacture. Children were generally loved and taken care of in Roman families. Boys were especially important because they would carry on the family name. When a child was born, it was placed on the ground by the midwife.
