Ancient Roman Silver Antoninianus of Philip Arab

Circa 244-247 AD
This AR Antoninianus of Philip I showcases a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of the emperor facing right on the obverse, bearing the inscription IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG. On the reverse, the figure of Roma is depicted seated left on a shield, holding Victory and a spear, with the inscription ROMAE AETERNAE.
Antoniniani were a type of Roman coin introduced during the reign of Caracalla, intended to alleviate the shortage of silver in circulation. They were widely used in trade and commerce throughout the Roman Empire.
