Ancient Roman Terracotta Exceptionally shaped Legionary ''Terra-Sigillata'' Vase with Embossed images of Columns and Boars. Very elegant shape with spherical body and a cylindric mouth and very stylishly ornamented handle made from the purest clay. Embossed images of two boars and four columns over the body. The boar was symbol of Legio XX Valeria Victrix formed from Octavian after the decisive battle of Actium 31 BC. The legion took the name of the remarkable general Marcus Valerius Messala Messalinus after his victory in the battle of Bellum Batonianum in AD 6 and the Pannonian uprising. He married the August's niece Claudia Marcela Jr. The legion XX which symbol was the boar was stationed also in Britania, Hispania Tarraconensis (Cantabrian War) , Germania Inferior, Illiria. The mouth is glued (but the glued part is from the same vase) , otherwise very well preserved. Extremely Rare especially this elegant shape and with images! Size: ca. 13,5 cm. Purchased by the current owner in 2020 in Austria, Wien. Collected Since: early 2000's. Previous owners history: Austrian Private Collection.
