Ancient Roman Terracotta Magnificent Oil Lamp with a Rare Scene Panther attacking a Gryllos a Thyrsos below Gryllos is a Fantastic Creature Gryllos- a misture of not existing creature like a human head and a tile of a fish Thyrsus- Symbol of Prosperity, Fertility, Hedonism and Pleasure/Enjoyment and the ending part of the the scepter of the god Dionysos or Bacchus, used in the Bacchanal dance and mysteries and the panther which sometimes the god Bacchus even rided. The whole scene is in a stylish embossed frame. Almost superb grade of preservation (only some small insignificant damages over the surface and handle) made from a high quality clay and slightly bigger dimensions. Extremely rare Size: 14cm. Item No. J51 Purchased by the current owner in 2020 in Austria, Wien from Collector fair. Collected Since: at least 2008. Previous owners history: Old Austrian Private Collection.
