Ancient Roman Weathered Green Glass 'Slag' Pendant Group, Roman Period, 20CD

[ translate ]

This group of three pendants is each set with an irregular ancient Roman glass fragment retained in a gold toned metal bezel fitted with a suspension bail, the fragments presenting varied weathered green and whitish surface tones. The group comprises a teardrop shaped fragment in a smooth rounded bezel, a square fragment with a beaded rope edge frame and a corner pin, and a hexagonal fragment in a plain bezel with a tubular bail. In ancient Roman tradition worn or broken glass fragments were preserved and worn as protective talismans, regarded as charged relics that safeguarded the wearer, and the accumulated surface weathering became part of the object's valued character. The glass shows a translucent pale green to aqua body beneath thick white chalky encrustation and mottled weathering, the teardrop fragment bearing a pale blue grey patina densely dotted with dark brown speckles, while the other two fragments retain cloudy white patches and fine pitting across the surface. The bezels are hand worked to follow the irregular outline of each fragment, with the glass edges set flush into the metal, and the surfaces carry natural aged wear consistent with long burial. Dimensions: 5 cm x 3.5 cm; total 3 pieces.
