Ancient Silk Road / Near Eastern Stone Human Bust Amulet Group, Ancient to Medieval Period, 34CD
This group of three miniature carved stone bust talismans, each depicting a stylised human head and neck, is rendered in varied stone materials. The set includes two dark speckled stone examples with simplified facial planes and incised features, the central bust further detailed with carved patterned hair, alongside one pale creamy white stone bust marked with warm russet burial staining. Within Near Eastern and Silk Road traditions, human head amulets functioned as potent apotropaic charms, believed to offer personal protection, ward off malevolent forces, and represent ancestral or guardian spirits. The carving is direct and schematic, with softly rounded forms, recessed eyes and defined lips. The dark stone busts show heavy weathering, mineral encrustation and matte burial patina, while the pale specimen displays subtle veining and light surface erosion from long interment. Dimensions: 3 cm x 1.8 cm; total 3 pieces.
