Ancient Silk Road / Near Eastern White Stone Animal & Figure Amulet Group, 28CD
This set of five miniature pierced talismans is carved from pale white and creamy stone, each formed as a seated or recumbent figure for suspension. The group includes a recumbent feline beast, a seated dog-like quadruped, a squat humanoid figure with pale pink staining at the base, a curled resting animal, and a stylized avian or serpentine creature. Within Near Eastern and Silk Road ancient belief systems, animal amulets served as protective guardians: felines warded off danger, dogs stood for vigilance and loyalty, human figures acted as intercessory charms, and avian forms represented spiritual transition and protection. The stone is predominantly milky off-white, naturally marked with tan burial patina, earthy encrustation settled within carving recesses, minor pitting and gentle wear from age and handling. The carving style is simplified and volumetric, with soft rounded forms and lightly incised lines for facial features and limbs; each piece is drilled for threading onto necklaces or textile cords.
