CARIA. Uncertain mint. Ca. early 5th century BC. AR stater (17mm, 10.71 gm). NGC VG. Persic Standard, (Mylasa?) Forepart of roaring lion right with outstretched foreleg / Wheel with four spokes; all in incuse circle. cf. SNG Kayhan 930 (irregular incuse reverse punch, divided into two halves). cf. Rosen 613 (same). cf. SNG von Aulock 8033 (quadripartite incuse). Apparently unpublished. The obverse is certainly Carian based on style, however the reverse wheel type is less clear. There are several possibilities for the wheel type, such as Sicily, Athens, Calabria and Boeotia, but a combination of a lion and wheel does not appear to be published.
