Andalusian school of the second half of the seventeenth century. "Dolorosa". Oil on canvas.

Andalusian school of the second half of the seventeenth century.
"Dolorosa".
Oil on canvas.
Presents faults and needs cleaning.
Frame of the XVIII century.
Size: 106 x 82.5 cm; 112.5 x 90 cm (frame).
In this work Mary is represented as the Virgin of Sorrows and Solitude, a theme very much to the taste of popular devotion, which will enjoy a great diffusion especially in the works destined to chapels and private altars. The theme is usually represented as we see here, with the Virgin alone in the foreground, in a dark and undefined environment, of an undoubtedly dramatic character. This type of figure of the Sorrowful Mary, bust-length and independent of any narrative context such as the Crucifixion or the Lamentation over the dead Christ, were common since the Middle Ages as devotional images. It was common to find this image, moreover, constituting a diptych or pair with the "Veronica" of Christ.
