André Gill was inspired, for this work, by the Chinese Nightingale, a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen. This story was also the inspiration for the famous ballet Le Chant du Rossignol, which premiered in 1920 Paris, for which the great Russian composer Igor Fjodorovitsj Stravinsky (1882-1971) wrote the music.
