Andrea Michieli, called Andrea Vicentino

[ translate ]

(Vicenza 1542–1617 Venice)
The Finding of Moses,
oil on canvas, 76.8 x 106.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private European collection

We are grateful to Mauro Lucco for suggesting the attribution of the present painting after examination in the original.

The present composition by Andrea Vicentino shows the influence of works by Paolo Veronese. Vicentino had already depicted the same subject in an altarpiece, commissioned in 1607, for Santa Caterina in Venice, as part of a series of works depicting episodes of the Stories of Moses (see G. Moschini, Guida per la città di Venezia all’amico delle belle arti, 1815, p. 679). The two versions differ in details, but the central group of figures are the same.
