Lyman: The face of New York. The city as it was and as it is. New York 1954 (here 2. ed. 1955), unpaginated (there detail and caption: With the coming of the subway in 1920 and the opening of the boardwalk in 1921, Coney was only a nickel away and the beach was more inviting than ever. The 100,000 who visited Coney on a summer Sunday in 1900 have become 1,000,000 today. There's more doing along the boardwalk, less along Surf Avenue and the Bowery. Now it's the Parachute Jump, roller coasters, knishes and cotton candy. The music of the carousel is an almost forgotten sound. But the beach! On a summer week-end, it's crowded enough, but during a hot spell-let's see if we can find a square inch of sand to call our own.) /
