Note: Influenced by Surrealism, Dada, and the religious imagery of Renaissance art, Serrano's work from this period in the 1980s used bodily fluids, in this case semen, as a way of investigating the relationship between beautiful imagery and the "obscene" or "vulgar" reality they represent. During the so-called "culture wars" at the end of the 1980s, Serrano was at the center of an intense debate surrounding his now-famous work Piss Christ, from 1987, a photograph of a crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist's urine. Like Piss Christ, his series of Ejaculate in Trajectory brings to the surface the long-existing debate about censorship in the arts and artistic freedom.
