Andrzej Stypiński and Jerzy Skolimowski Mistrzostwa Szermiercze Europy / Championnats d'Europe d'Escrime vintage poster
Caption Brief: "This dynamic poster announces the 1934 European fencing championships, held for the first time in Poland. Sponsored by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, or FIE (International Fencing Federation), this competition has been held annually with few exceptions since 1921 and has gradually grown to encompass all three divisions of the sport—épée, sabre, and foil. Despite being a joint work, the composition itself is perfectly balanced and harmonious. [...] The artists did a wonderful job of making the white fencing costume stand out against the background: they simply surround it with black, a solution as practical as it is handsome. Moreover, by creating a diagonal 'ticker tape' of the participating countries' flags, the eye is forced to constantly move around the page—there is no logical resting place, keeping the viewer continuously interested and entertained" (The Art Deco Poster, Crouse, p. 125).
