Andy Warhol Polaroid by Fred Hughes (1943-2001) Andy Warhol with Jane Forth, 1971 Unique Polaroid print 3-3/4 x 2-7/8 inches (9.5 x 7.3 cm) (image) 4-1/4 x 3-3/8 inches (sheet) PROVENANCE: The Photographers' Gallery, London; Private collection, acquired from the above, 1971. The present lot is a snapshot taken by Andy Warhol's assistant Fred Hughes as he accompanied Warhol and other members of the Factory on a European tour in February of 1971. Despite its brevity, the tour was a flurry of activity, including the London openings of both Warhol's major retrospective at the Tate Gallery and the concurrent show, "Andy Warhol: Polaroids," at The Photographers' Gallery, as well as the premier of Trash, directed by Paul Morrissey, and an awards ceremony hosted by German newspaper, Abendzeitung, both held in Munich. Through it all, Hughes managed to capture these unique and candid moments between Warhol and his Factory entourage. At the close of their tour, these small but intimate prints were delivered to the Photographers' Gallery and offered for sale as an accompaniment to Warhol's own work for the remainder of the exhibition.
