biography
The American pop artist Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928 as Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents are Czechoslovak immigrants. He initially completed an apprenticeship as a window dresser before studying art history as well as pictorial design, sociology and psychology at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh from 1945 to 1949. He then went to New York where he called himself Andy Warhol from then on.
Until 1960, Warhol worked as a freelance advertising artist for fashion magazines, as an illustrator and as a window dresser. The Art Directors Club awarded him medals in 1952 and 1957 for his design of newspaper advertisements. In 1952, Andy Warhol's first exhibition "Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote" took place at the Hugo Gallery.
In 1962 the first series was created with “Campbell’s soup cans” and “Coca Cola bottles” as well as screen prints with the motif of dollar bills. Andy Warhol calls his studio, in which numerous friends and assistants work, the “Factory”. His art is now characterized by the use of well-known motifs or symbols from everyday mass culture, and he also uses mechanical-serial production processes, such as screen printing, which were previously considered unartistic.
In 1962 Andy Warhol took part in the exhibition "The New Realists" in New York. In the years that followed, Warhol's choice of motifs became darker. Series with images of death and catastrophe are created. Using the screen printing process and consciously using the poor image quality of newspaper printing, he chooses plane crashes, traffic accidents, crime and atomic bomb explosions. Warhol also criticizes consumer and mass culture with his cardboard and wooden sculptures, which exactly replicate the commercial packaging. Andy Warhol shaped Pop Art with his work.
In the 1960s, Andy Warhol also dealt with the medium of film. He develops a special film aesthetic through simple technology, long, static camera shots, and the avoidance of editing and editing. In 1963 the silent films “Sleep”, “Kiss” and “Eat” were made, and in 1964 “Empire”. The following sound films were also shown at the Cannes Film Festival, such as "Chelsea Girl" from 1966. From 1966 onwards, Andy Warhol also worked with the rock band "Velvet Underground" on shows for nightclubs.
In the 1970s, the pop artist screen-printed Polaroid photos of famous people onto canvas, including portraits such as "Elvis Presley" (1964) , "Jackie Kennedy" (1965) , "Marilyn Monroe" (1967) and "Mao Tse Tung " (1972) .
In 1968, Andy Warhol was shot and critically injured by Valerie Solanas. In 1984, Warhol worked on projects with artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.
Andy Warhol dies on February 22, 1987 in New York.
