Anglo-Indian Carved and Painted Canopy Bedstead, Purportedly Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) and Once Belonging to a Governor of Java, Circa 1780. Painted in blue, red and gold, the arched headboard edged with a flowering vine border and continuing to acanthus scrolls surmounted by floral clusters, on the front an armorial of a crown over matching acanthus and scrolls centering an eight-spoked wheel similar to a chakra or Wheel of the Law, above a symbol of a circle with two prongs and bow-tied vacant wreath flanked by star roundels, the bottom with two rows of alternating circles and diamonds enclosing stars, each tapered post carved with vertical bellflower rows, the bed frames each carved with stiff leaftip panels, raised on bulbous legs, each affixed with an oval star medallion and headed by a bracket carved with vinery, the canopy surmounted by four finials carved with leaves.
