Description: Folio (35 x 22 cm): [7]-[1 bl.]-[39]-[83 bl.]-[1]-[3 bl.], on paper, in French (some foxing and soiling). - A curious manuscript relating to an academy of young people created in Ghent on November 23, 1848, with the aim of progress and entertainment and with the motto "Prosunt et delectavit". The society was founded by ten people: Richard Brewer, Émile Debraene, Hector De Smedt, Auguste Ellebroudt, Alfred Faider, César Snoeck (probably the famous Belgian instrument collector, 1834-1898), Alexandre Valcke, Jules Van Der Meersch, François Van Sieleghem and Isidore Walravens. It had 27 members when it was founded and brought together three societies (literature, symphony and choir). The book contains the archives of the society: general rules, particular laws, the register of the minutes of the society from December 18, 1848, to August 22, 1849, and a list of all the members. This document is a precious and unique testimony to the cultural and social life of Ghent during the mid-19th c., while the European continent was shaken by the revolutions of 1848.

Condition: Contemp. dark green half-shagreen, covers of gilt-ruled and gilt-titled dark blue buckram, gilt ornam. flat spine, a.e.g. (± used).
